Legal News You Can Use
On September 1, 2009, several new laws went into effect in the State of Texas. Among them is the following:
DRIVING IN SCHOOL ZONES
House Bill 55 makes it illegal to use a wireless communication device in a school zone unless the vehicle is stopped or a hands-free device isused. Cities or counties that choose to enforce this law must post a sign atthe beginning of each school zone. These signs must inform drivers that using a wireless communications device is prohibited and that the operator is subjectto a fine if the law is violated. This new law cannot be enforced if such signs are not posted. Also, it is a defense to prosecution under this new law if the driver was making an emergency call while in the area of a school zone.
